Teacher Training

When you have fallen in love with the rhythms
And teaching has become a calling
I invite you to join me.

Gabrielle

Thanks for your interest in Gabrielle Roth's Teacher Training.  We assume that whether you are a newcomer to the 5Rhythms or a long-term dancer, the practice has touched you in a way that inspires you to offer it to others.

The path to becoming a teacher is rigorous, and we encourage you to read all the information below to see if it's the right path for you.

The next 5Rhythms Teacher Training will begin in September of 2013.  Application to the training is a two-step process.

It's important to recognize that you have already begun your training. Devote these next months to letting the practice sink in so deeply that you yourself become a teaching on the dance floor. There is nowhere to go until you have physically embodied the rhythms with a clarity and passion that will inspire others. Find teachers who know of your desire to take the training and ask them their sense of your readiness. Ask for their feedback to bring more awareness to your strengths, and to what parts of you (physically, emotionally, mentally) need more movement in order to become a teacher of this practice. Video yourself and take a look: be your own teacher and give yourself feedback. Take yourself on.

Below you'll find the list of prerequisites. Please read this list carefully and completely.

It is so important that the prerequisites be taken slowly over time. Allow yourself to integrate each workshop and its teachings -- give it time to enter your bones, your blood, your dance, your heart, your life - before running to the next workshop. We have found that people who race through the curriculum are less prepared to be teachers, as they have missed a lot of the teachings in the rush.

If you are not far enough along in your study to complete everything easily by September 2013, wisdom suggests that you slow down and wait for the next training. We will suggest that too...

This may sound complicated, especially if English is not your first language, so please feel free to contact us to help you sort it all out.

We look forward to a long ride together on the dancing path.

With love,

Lori Saltzman and Kathy Altman

5RHYTHMS TEACHER TRAINING: PREREQUISITE COURSEWORK*

* It is the student's responsibility to make sure all of their teachers are listed on the 5Rhythms.com website, as only these teachers are authorized to provide pre-requisite hours.

The following is the minimum amount of study needed to apply. In most cases preference will be given to those who have spent the longest time embodying the practice.

1) A minimum of 3 years studying this practice.

2) WAVES: at least 300 hours studying the basic 5Rhythms practice. Only instructed classes and workshops qualify for these hours - not Sweat Your Prayers or classes in which the teacher plays a wave but does not give specific instruction in the 5Rhythms practice.

3) HEARTBEAT: a minimum of 15 days of study, with at least 2 different teachers.

4) CYCLES: a minimum of 15 days of study, with at least 2 different teachers.

5) MIRRORS: A minimum of 15 days of study. This includes Mirrors, Tribal Mirrors, Rhythm & Repetition, and The Naked Soul.

Note: Open Floor or Undercurrents with Andrea Juhan, or Perspectives with Alain Allard, may be substituted for 5 days of Mirrors.

6) FACULTY ELECTIVES: 15 days of additional study, with at least two or more different Core Faculty of The Moving Center (Gabrielle, Kathy Altman, Jonathan Horan, Andrea Juhan, Lori Saltzman).

Any workshop on any topic taught by these faculty can be used to fulfill this last requirement. You might decide to take extra Waves, Heartbeat or Cycles workshops with Faculty. Or you might take Faculty workshops outside the above categories, such as Gabrielle's August Intensive, Silver Desert, God Sex & the Body, Libido, Write of Passage, etc.

First priority: study with Gabrielle, wherever and whenever she teaches. As the source of the 5Rhythms practice, there is no substitute for drinking at the well of her living, breathing embodiment of this work.

Every member of the Core Faculty brings 30+ years of physical, emotional and spiritual embodiment of the 5Rhythms to their teaching. Your study with each one of them will be invaluable. It's important that you learn from as many different faculty members as possible, as they each bring unique gifts. It's important for them to get to know you as well.

LETTER OF INTEREST - INSTRUCTIONS

Before you fill out a Letter of Interest, please ask yourself:

Is this training for me?  This is the first and most important question to ask yourself.  This program is for experienced students of the 5Rhythms who have invested time and energy in a deep exploration of the Rhythms, as well as Gabrielle's other maps, over an extended period of time.  It's for people who understand, from their own intimate experience, how the Rhythms are a vehicle for self-healing; for people who live the Rhythms as a spiritual practice and have used them to awaken themselves again and again.

Teaching this work is a path of mastery (the ability to physically embody the 5Rhythms), integrity (proper training and preparation to facilitate this healing practice) and humility (knowing that teaching is but a lifetime commitment to being a student).

This training requires a deep surrender:  you may complete all the prerequisites, but not be ready for the training.  You might complete the training, but not be ready to teach just yet.  By the end of the training, you will have been seen in a very deliberate and personal way, and given specific feedback to further develop your readiness, skills and talents. Once you take the tools from this training - offer them, practice them, live them, embody them - you begin the path toward becoming a teacher.

What is my current work in the world and how can the Rhythms become part of my service?
This is the second question to ask of yourself.  Not everyone is destined for a life of teaching classes and workshops.  The heart of the 5Rhythms work is service, and to that end we are encouraging people to take the training to incorporate the Rhythms into their existing occupation, such as work in a home for seniors, or a career as a school teacher.  Gabrielle has recently established a non-profit corporation, 5Rhythms Reach Out, to bring our practice to people who are unlikely or unable to attend workshop: elders, inner city children, the disabled or disadvantaged, etc.

This is the growing edge of our practice across the globe - reaching out to bring this healing work wherever it is needed.  To this end, an integral part of your training year will be community service assignments - serving an elder, teaching the 5Rhythms for a non-profit group, working with teenagers, etc.

Once you have completed the training and have been authorized to start offering the practice back in your community, you become eligible to join The 5Rhythms Teachers' Association, a professional organization that provides continuing education and teacher gatherings, links to all 5Rhythms teachers around the world, marketing of your events on Gabrielle's global website, discounts on workshops, and other support for your teaching practice.

This training will be a profound initiation in preparation to lead people in the 5Rhythm practice.  It's an intensive, year-long process that includes training modules with Gabrielle and faculty, as well as interim projects and community service.
